Last week marked a tremendous victory for women’s health as the Obama administration announced new rules that improve insurance coverage of preventive health services for women. These new rules, based on recommendations from the Institute of Medicine’s expert panel (IOM) and initiated by the new health care law, will ensure all women have access to quality affordable care that has been proven to improve their health.
Has raised over $1 million in 2012 cycle
SANTA BARBARA – Continuing to show strength, Representative Lois Capps' reelection campaign has reported its best fundraising quarter for the 2012 cycle. The Capps campaign collected $321,643 during the final fundraising quarter for 2011. The campaign was supported by over 750 individual donors, with 73% contributing less than $200 and 77% of all individual contributions coming from Central Coast supporters.
SANTA BARBARA – Congresswoman Lois Capps released the following statement after the adoption of final congressional district lines by the California Redistricting Commission:
“I am pleased to announce that I will be running for election to the 24th congressional district to represent the people of the Central Coast in the U.S. House of Representatives. The new 24th district is comprised of a wonderfully diverse array of communities, from coastal communities like Cambria, Santa Barbara and Carpinteria, to vital agricultural centers such as Paso Robles, Santa Maria and the Santa Ynez Valley, and important centers of education, military and high tech like San Luis Obispo, Vandenberg Air Force Base and Goleta. I am very excited to have the opportunity to once again represent the hardworking people of these wonderful communities.
Asks where are candidates on Ryan plan?
SANTA BARBARA – Today the campaign of Congresswoman Lois Capps released a web ad denouncing false attacks on her from the National Republican Campaign Committee. The ad points out that the real threat to Medicare comes from the so-called Ryan plan, adopted by the House in a partisan vote, which would privatize Medicare by turning it into a voucher plan. Capps has been on record in opposition to the Ryan plan but some of the politicians supported by the group that is running the ad have yet to take a position on it. The ad can be viewed here: http://www.cappsforcongress.com/.
WASHINGTON – Today, Capps Campaign Spokesman Randolph Harrison issued the following statement in response to a National Republican Campaign Committee political ad buy in Congresswoman Capps’ congressional district. The content of the ad has been thoroughly discredited by the Washington Post’s Fact Checker, which gave the ad “4 Pinocchios”, its most acute rating for errors and obvious contradictions in an advertisement.
A member of the U.S. House of Representatives for 12 years, Rep. Lois Capps, D-Santa Barbara, represents California’s 23rd District, which stretches from Ventura County to San Luis Obispo County.
In the sprawling district, registered Democrats outnumber Republican voters by nearly 2-to-1. Thus, it is not surprising that during her six terms in office, Rep. Capps has built a solid record of representing her constituents’ political views and policy interests while also responding to their requests for assistance with issues involving federal agencies.
On the basis of that record, The Star endorses Rep. Capps for re-election Nov. 2.
Electing members of congress is a bit like buying a life insurance policy; only over time do they pay off. Lois Capps, a solidly liberal Democrat, has represented Santa Barbara in Congress since Bill Clinton was president. That gives her seniority, which, in the nation’s capitol, still counts for a lot, especially when Capps’s party controls the White House and, at least for the time being, Congress.
SANTA MARIA – Today, Santa Maria Mayor Larry Lavagnino endorsed Congresswoman Lois Capps in her bid for re-election at a press conference at the Santa Maria Levee. Mayor Lavagnino cited Congresswoman Capps’ dedicated service to her constituents in Santa Maria, highlighting her work in helping to ensure the city received $40 million in Recovery Act funding to repair the Santa Maria Levee.
“You have delivered and that’s why, as far as I’m concerned, there’s not any difference here between Democrat and Republican. We’re working together to serve and protect the people of Santa Maria,” said Mayor Larry Lavagnino.
SANTA BARBARA – Today, Capps Campaign Spokeswoman, Ashley Schapitl, released the following statement regarding the Congresswoman’s debate schedule.
“Congresswoman Capps has accepted the invitation of KEYT and the Santa Barbara Daily Sound as well as Santa Barbara City College to attend their candidates’ forums later this month. From cutting taxes for small businesses eight times, to reducing interest rates for student loans, to enacting a patient's bill of rights to ensure your health insurance is always there when you need it, the Congresswoman has a great story to tell, and is looking forward to participating. She will also be traveling up and down the Central Coast this October meeting with constituents in a variety of settings, as she always does," said Ashley Schapitl, campaign spokeswoman.
SANTA BARBARA – Upon Congresswoman Capps’ acceptance of an invitation to participate in a candidates’ forum hosted by KEYT and the Santa Barbara Daily Sound, Danielle LeTendre, the Congresswoman’s campaign manager, released the following statement:
“With the completion of the Congressional session, Congresswoman Capps is looking forward to engaging in the political process and asking the residents of the Central and South Coast for their support this November. She is happy to accept the invitation of KEYT and the Santa Barbara Daily Sound to engage her opponents. From cutting taxes for small businesses eight times, to reducing interest rates for student loans to enacting a patient's bill of rights to ensure your health insurance is always there when you need it, the Congresswoman has a great story to tell. She encourages all of the other candidates to attend.”
