Santa Maria Mayor Larry Lavagnino Endorses Congresswoman Lois Capps
SANTA MARIA – Today, Santa Maria Mayor Larry Lavagnino endorsed Congresswoman Lois Capps in her bid for re-election at a press conference at the Santa Maria Levee. Mayor Lavagnino cited Congresswoman Capps’ dedicated service to her constituents in Santa Maria, highlighting her work in helping to ensure the city received $40 million in Recovery Act funding to repair the Santa Maria Levee.
“You have delivered and that’s why, as far as I’m concerned, there’s not any difference here between Democrat and Republican. We’re working together to serve and protect the people of Santa Maria,” said Mayor Larry Lavagnino.
"I am very grateful for Mayor Lavagnino's endorsement but more grateful for his hard work on behalf of Santa Marians. I appreciate the way he puts serving people before politics. It has been a real pleasure to work with him on behalf of the people of Santa Maria," said Capps.
Congresswoman Capps has secured federal funding for the City of Santa Maria to repair its Levee twice. She also worked closely with the Army Corps of Engineers to ensure the project was shovel-ready, and therefore eligible for the $40 million in Recovery Act funding. She also helped write legislation, which was approved by the House of Representatives, to delay for 5 years the mandatory requirement of the purchase of flood insurance for homeowners in a neighborhood newly classified as a flood zone.
In addition to the Santa Maria Levee, Capps has worked with local Santa Maria officials to secure funding for the expansion of the Santa Maria Library, construction of a new intermodal transit center, as well as the Santa Maria River bridge.
